Junior Cricket Festival - Effects of tropical cyclone spared the event.  Ruzawi were the winners

Eight schools attended the festival this year, held on the 23rd-24th February. The 96 youngsters brought an energy and vibrancy to the College which was not dampened by the long distances some of them had travelled. Thankfully we had good weather and the effects of the Mozambique cyclone didn't reach us until the Monday morning after the festival when the heavens opened and the wind howled.

Junior Cricketers In Action at the Festival

All of the boys showed tremendous enthusiasm for the game and enjoyed wonderful support from their coaches and numerous parents who had come down to watch. Quiet Waters and Woodlands were fully booked, several families camped in tents at the pool and many staff members opened their homes in order to accommodate everyone. Our senior boys chaperoned the individual teams and were superb ambassadors for the College. Paul Kirsten generously donated over 100 T-shirts specially printed for the occasion. The results were as follows

1st     Ruzawi
2nd     Lilfordia
3rd     Musikili
4th     Barwick
5th     Whitestone
6th     Vic Falls
7th     Bryden
8th     Murray Mac Dougal

Musikili won a special award for "The team that created the greatest impression"

Open day 2007 - A Resounding Success.
Visitors were immensely impressed.

This was held on Thursday 8th March and we were overwhelmed by the turnout - some families had come from Botswana, Zambia and even Mozambique. Parents and boys started arriving from 9am and enjoyed a warming cup of tea as it was cold and drizzling. Thankfully, the weather improved and the rest of the day remained dry so no one got wet. Registration was followed by displays and talks held in the hall at 10:30. Everyone was then escorted by our prefects on tours of the campus and all stayed for drinks and lunch in the Todd Hall. It proved to be a most successful and enjoyable day.

Right: The Todd Hall was packed with prospective parents.  This year more than twice the expected number attended the Open Day

Very positive comments were made.  The visitors were impressed by the impeccable manner of our boys, particularly the prefects who took them on conducted tours of the college, the excellent facilities at the College and developments taking place.

Interhouse Public Speaking Contest

The Inter-house public speaking competition took place on Friday 2 March. The adjudicators were Miss T Ndlovu and Mrs L Oosthuizen and Mrs S Wigham gave an evaluation. As usual each house enterd 4 boys - a Chairman, a Thanker, a junior and a senior speaker. There was the usual variety of topics but the main criticism this year was that voice production was not loud enough.

The results were as follows: Best Chairman - M James and T Randell; Best Thanker - A Bruins; Best Junior - K Robinson and Best Senior Speaker - M Moyo, who will go on to compete in the Lions' Inter-schools competition. The house order was:

6th Tredgold
5th Hervey
4th Oates
3rd Founders
2nd George Grey
1st Chubb

Three Woods Cross Country at Lilfordia

On Friday the 2nd March Pete and Jacqui Stewart went to promote Falcon College at Lilfordia school, just north of Harare. On their arrival they met with Harvey Leared (member of the Board of Governors of Falcon College), Alistair Campbell (Bursar of Lilfordia School and former Zimbabwe Cricket Captain) and Brenda Marchussen (who was heavily involved in the organisation and Administration of Reach for the Stars) and were able to participate in the presentation of a lap top computer, submersible pump, bicycle, stationary, numerous food stuffs and cleaning products to the children of the neighbouring Umzururu School. This was part of the initiative of the Reach for the Stars fundraising drive which Mr Leared felt must include the disadvantaged schools within our immediate communities. Falcon will be focusing on Carlisle School and hope to hold that presentation on Friday 16th March.

25 junior schools from all over the country attended the Three Woods Cross country meeting hosted by Lilfordia every year. Over 760 youngsters braved the 3km course and there was an enormous crowd of supporters.

760 youngsters participated in the 3 km cross country race.

This proved to be a wonderful opportunity to show the Falcon DVD, rolling slide show and hand out prospectuses. Entry applications were taken - including three Grade 1's for entry in 2014!

Rhombic Adders hatch in Captivity

Some members of the Snake Club recently witnessed night adders hatching.  Our photographer was at the scene to picture this exciting event.

A rhombic night adder which has been in captivity at the Snake Club premises for about 2 months and a half laid 20 eggs in January. Last week eight of the eggs were successfully hatched.  Within 24 hours the baby night adders were released, but mum remains in custody.

Right:  The first nigh adder to be hatched 'snakes' away from its egg. The rest can be seen wriggling out of their shells.

Less than 24 hours later the baby night adders were released into Mr. Armstrong's garden to make a lone start in this exciting but dangerous world.  At this young and tender age predators abound, especially birds.
