Reach for the Stars function a Great Success
A staggering $250 million (revalued) was raised.
Theme:
A celebration of Education

"Reach for the Stars" - A Celebration of Education.

Friday the 10th of November was a blue letter day for Lilfordia and Falcon College. These two leading Country schools joined forces to launch a spectacular fund raising evening at the Harry Margolis Hall. It was, without doubt, one of the top social events of the year, with world-class décor, entertainment and cuisine.

Reality or fantasy?
This myriad of lights and the kaleidoscopic decor are not an optical illusion.  This was the real scene in the Harry Margolis Hall on the gala evening. 400 guests were in attendance.

"Reach for the Stars" was the brainchild of Harvey Leared whose vision to ensure that QUALITY, RELEVANCE AND INCLUSIVENESS be safeguarded in our traditional schools, despite the harsh economic climate that prevails in Zimbabwe today. His passion ignited and motivated a huge number of individuals and companies to "dig deep" and give willingly of their time and resources to ensure the enormous success of the event.

The two key fund raising events held on the night were the 50 Million-Dollar Draw and the Star Auction, which offered goods in 5 different categories –

ARTWORKS: by some of Zimbabwe’s leading artists,

TRAVEL: from a second honeymoon in Paris, a golfing getaway at Fancourt (George) or local treats at top resorts throughout Zimbabwe to a Mozambique Island retreat.

HUNTING CAMPS: 4 magnificent camps offered

SUNDRY from a generator and borehole pump to a 2-man canoe and laptop

EDUCATION: a 7 year Lilfordia and 6 year Falcon College education including all tuition and boarding fees, 3 year University tuition at a South African University of your choice.

The Falcon Leavers of 1982 donated a Falcon Scholarship in memory of Andrew Stobart and Ian Hammond.

The Lilfordia and Falcon "product" sang 8 breathtakingly beautiful songs with amazing visual effects including footage from the Lion King and a DVD produced specially for the event. Billy St John – Falcons Music teacher - entertained diners on his Saxophone and John Jones concluded the proceedings with a powerful rendition of "The Impossible Dream". Rob Osborne and Ellie Warren had the dance floor packed till the early hours of the morning.

A staggering Z$250 Million was raised by this event and is testament to the hard working team of people who have faith in the future, who dare to dream the impossible dream and who will ensure a firm foundation is maintained so our children can "Reach for the Stars".

Falcon Receives 65 mm rain over the weekend
The first significant rainfall at the college this season was recorded over the weekend.  The downpour was quite heavy and 65 mm of the much-needed rain was recorded.  The gardens, sports fields and weirs at Quiet waters will certainly benefit from this downpour.

George Grey Form 1 Dorm Complete
The refurbishing  and upgrading of the George Grey Form 1 dorm is now complete and the boys have moved in. The boys are very happy and proud of their cubicles.  The yellow finish is really beautiful.  The choice of yellow is quite appropriate - yellow is the George Grey house colour.

Home away from home?

Construction workers have now moved to Oates House where the refurbishing of the Form two Dorm there has just started.  The upgrading and refurbishing of Founders and Hervey Form 1 dorms will require major structural adjustments and will only start during the Christmas holidays.

Etiquette Society - Last Dinner 2006

The Etiquette Society held its annual dinner in the Todd Hall on Saturday 11 November. The guest speaker was Mr Allan Wale. Bursar at the College, and other invited guests were Miss Amanda Watson and Mr Munya Munikwa and his partner. The members of the society had, as always, organised the whole event, from planning the menu, to designing and printing the programme and place names, to decorating the dinner area, to running the whole occasion!

The theme was an African one and the décor and lighting were superb. As always, Gordon and Heather Macdonald were most impressed by what the boys achieved and how they conducted the evening. Thanks are due to the catering staff for an excellent meal, and to the fourth formers who were the very capable waiters. All in all, it was a very enjoyable event, and a fitting end to a fruitful year.

Novices Braai

The annual Novices braai was held at the home of Gordon and Heather Macdonald on the evening of Friday 10 November. The weather was perfect, but the host arrived smoky and dishevelled having spent the afternoon helping to fight a fire on Quiet Waters. However, the boys rallied around and our guest, FoB and former Zimbabwe cricket captain, Heath Streak, was warmly welcomed. It was very kind of him to agree to come and spend the evening at the College, and the boys seized the opportunity to mix informally with him. Not only cricket was discussed - there was much comparison of life at Falcon in Heath’s time and now! It was a very happy way to end the year.

Carmel School Outing to Quiet Waters

Right: Pupils from Carmel School strolling at Quiet Waters

This last weekend, the Wild Life Club of Carmel School visited Quiet Waters. Mrs Debbie Kelly, who taught at Falcon some time back, runs the club and she brought with her 24 pupils and 3 supporting adults!

The visitors were accommodated in the campsite, and Gordon Macdonald conducted various environmental courses for the children both at Quiet Waters and at Falcon. Various people assisted him in this. Graham Armstrong talked on snakes and allowed the children to handle some of the snakes - not the poisonous ones! Craig Mirams spoke on raptors, and members of the Junior Natural History club helped in all sorts of ways, including conducting walks in the park.

The group was fed by the catering staff of the College, and they were most impressed by the delicious food they were given.

On the Saturday night the College had 65mm of rain, which was much needed, but luckily there were few hiccups at the campsite as a result of the storm.

Before departing on Sunday the Carmel group visited the Macdonalds’ garden and were shown various ways of creating a suitable environment for all sorts of wild creatures.

We hope they will visit again!
