Athletics Since the half term break we have been involved in athletics but rain – welcome for the most part – has had quite a large role to play. It disrupted the early season training, made the morning session of Founders Day pretty miserable, and, most unfortunate of all, led to the cancellation of the Inter Schools event which promised to be very competitive. Anyhow, we have not had everything washed out. The first event of the year was the Inter House Relays. As ever it was a competitive and enjoyable event. For both athletes and officials it is perhaps seen as a practice run for Founders Day but it is none the worse for that. It was a great day weather-wise which was a relief to all concerned and despite fuel shortages and cost a good number of parents managed to get out to Falcon to watch. As a relay/team competition it is not possible to single out any particular individuals. Lack of opportunity to train and practice combined with a softish track from the rain probably meant that the performances were not as good as sometimes in the past. For the record the results were as
follows : 1.
Founders
2. George Grey
3. Hervey
4. Chubb 5.
Tredgold
6. Oates Next came Founders Day. As usual, the 3000 m races were held the preceding Thursday and I for one am always amazed how interesting these long distance races can be for a spectator as the lead changes (or doesn’t) and different race strategies are shown to be successful (or not!). As a result of points awarded for those races and from qualification for races on Founders Day itself, Oates House was in the lead and to the surprise of many people, not least to the Oates boys themselves, that was where they remained to win only their second Founders Day in the history of Falcon. Which is not to say it was just a
procession of Oates victories. At no stage were they in a position where
the lead was unassailable and George Grey and Founders were constantly
breathing down their necks. This year we used a new system, which I have
been advocating for a while. Instead of qualification for all 6 places
in an event we had qualification only for the top 2 positions and each
House provided an athlete in each event. I personally do not believe it
lowered the standard of the overall competition but did increase the
interest. Wayne Nyamana of Founders won the Victor
Ludorum. I do not have a full list of the records broken so I apologise
to someone whose record I have omitted because I am fairly sure there
were three. Tapiwa Pongweni ran the U14 400m in record time and George
Grey beat the record for the U15 4x400m relay but I am not sure on the
third I fear. The final positions are these : 1.
Oates 2. George
Grey 3. Founders
4. Hervey
5. Tredgold
6. Chubb My final point on
Founders Day is to record that Tredgold beat Hervey in the tug of war
competition. Oates incidentally came last in this one. You win some, you
lose some! With the cancellation of the Inter
Schools event, the only competition we had with other schools was the
CBC Relays meeting on the last Saturday of term. I myself did not
actually attend but it appears that it was close fought all of the way
though sadly CBC just won by a few points. There are the inevitable
complaints about this that and the other but Orlando Fernandes, our
athletics man, reckons that on the day it was a fair result. Cricket More recently the U14, U16 and U19
age-groups have had trials to select teams for Matabeleland at the Inter
Provincial tournaments these coming holidays. The following Falcon boys have been
selected : U14 : J Chitate, R
Gilmour, A van Heerden, R Sargeant, Winter SportsThere has not been much
sign of rugby training yet which might surprise some of you. Just a
little informal “touch”. The hockey team have done a lot of
practising for their tour to South Africa and the soccer team warmed up
for their trip with a 4 or was it 5 – 0 victory over Mzingwane last
week which I trust is a promise of more to come. Not a winter sport but
our other tourists are the basketball team and they too have been
putting in the hours on the court to prepare themselves for opposition
down in Durban. Richard Harrison 4 April 2006 |
