March 2002

We are well into the athletics season now but it has already been disrupted by changes in exeat weekends due to the elections and no doubt more disruption will be coming our way but we hope to climax the term with the Founders Day athletics on the last day of term.

Inter-House Relays

We have already had the Inter House Relays, which was a very closely contested meeting with 13 points separating the top 5 Houses. In the end Chubb managed to see off the challenge from Oates with Hervey, George Grey and Founders also not far behind. Only Tredgold were a little way adrift.

Athletics

We have also been sending boys to the zonal athletics meetings and the first two we have attended our boys have done well but the next one, to be held at Beit Bridge, will be much more challenging with a much wider range of schools competing. One of them is Plumtree and we know they are in good form this year because they won the Inter Schools Relays which was held at CBC. CBC themselves came second and we were third.

Cricket

The cricket season ended with matches against Peterhouse. The 16As, 14Bs and 2nds lost, the 14As held on bravely to force a draw while the other teams won. The 15As managed to reverse a big defeat from last term, which was very commendable. There were no big run makers but Barry Stewart took 4 wickets.

Finally the 1st XI came out on top in what was a two day two innings match. Gary Manchip and Andrew McVey (on debut) scored fifties while Stanley Marisa, back from his exploits in New Zealand playing for Zimbabwe in the U19 World Cup, took the bowling honours.

Lower down in the scheme of things, perhaps, but Mark de Smidt deserves mention for scoring 130 not out for the 15B side and Jason de Lange for a century for the 16Bs (having just been dropped from the A side – that’ll serve me right as the 16A coach!)

Water Polo

The waterpolo team finished the season with a tournament at St John’s. We came 5th out of 10 but Eric Wetherall as coach feels we could have done a bit better with some more self-belief.

Basketball

Basketball sadly has had very few matches for one reason or another but the junior teams seem to have been largely successful.
