Historic First Founders Day Win for Oates

On Tuesday this week we finished the term with the Founders Day athletics. Rain has not been a problem this term as far as disrupting sport is concerned though the fields are not as green as they might be at this time of year. Fortunately the weather didn’t have the last laugh with a torrential downpour and it proved an excellent way to end the term. If we could always guarantee a warm sunny day for the last day of term it would be a perfect precedent to continue with in the future.

The athletics this term has suffered from the election date forcing a rearrangement of many meetings and failure of many boys to return in the immediate post-election period but we did at least finish on a high and historical note. A high note because, as expected, it was a closely fought contest with Chubb, George Grey, Hervey and Oates all leading at one stage or another. Historical because, for the first time in the College’s history, Oates ran out (if I may use that expression!) the winners to the jubilation of the boys and many Oates parents who had made the trip.  The final line-up then was:

First:

Second:

Third:

Fourth:

Fifth:

Sixth:

George Grey

Hervey

Chubb

Two Outstanding Individuals

On an individual level, two athletes stand out. Two records only were broken and both of them fell to Thulani Mahamba-Sithole of George Grey winning in record time, the 100 and 200m events in the U15 age-group. The Victor Ludorum is awarded to the most successful U20 athlete and this year the trophy was won by Founder’s Yananiso Chadzinya, who won 100 and 200m sprints, 110m hurdles, long jump and triple jump. Well done to the two of them.

Dubai Rugby Festival
As I write, the rugby team is in training for their trip to Dubai and leaves on Tuesday.   This is an annual event organised by the Dubai International School Boy Rugby Festival Committee (of which Roy Dixon - who was at Falcon from 1982 to 1986 - is a member); the Committee invites schools from around the world to play rugby in Dubai. This year, Falcon will again be touring, in spite of the huge hurdle of Forex and political turmoil.  The Festival runs from 6th to 13th April 2002.

The web site www.dubaischoolboyrugby.com is now live, and will be updated daily with the results of all the matches played and reports by a professional rugby journalist. To get you in the mood, here are some photos of the Falcon 1st XV in action - click on any of the thumbnails to see the full picture.

The soccer team is also off on tour but more locally, to South Africa and Botswana. Some of our cricketers are also involved in Inter Provincial tournaments held in Mutare (U14), at Falcon (U16) and Harare (U19). Stanley Marisa who starred at the U19 World Cup is currently on tour again, this time in Namibia where he is with the Zimbabwe ‘A’ team.

Now we all take a deep breath and prepare ourselves for the winter term, which always seems pressurised but will hopefully provide us with some entertaining and successful sport.
