SPORTS RESULTS : 5th-11th February 2005
SPORTS REPORT Right from the 4th day of term, our sports teams have been competing against local competition and, I am glad to report, with more success than otherwise. Let me try to bring you some details, though I have to admit that not all coaches have given me names and information as I would have liked so forgive me if the balance of this report seems in any way biased. Waterpolo : Our first team waterpolo has now beaten CBC two weeks in succession, which is a great achievement. I think our team could do well this year. The second team has won all its matches against CBC and Girls’ College showing depth at senior level. Lack of a coach or even a member of staff interested and available is a concern for the waterpolo but we thank Mr Craig Leesom who has volunteered to assist with the senior teams and travel out to Falcon to coach them. The U16 teams are mainly made up this year of U15 and even U14 boys, I believe. This year they are being coached by Greg Gavazzi and Ben Grobler. They have recorded a victory over CBC but have lost the other two encounters. Basketball : on the first Saturday of term we hosted a mini tournament with the 1st team successful against Plumtree and Petra, who we also beat the following weekend, but lost narrowly to CBC. Junior teams notched up a clean sweep against Petra but had mixed results on their last trip to town, the U14 and U16 sides both winning one match and losing the other against a variety of opposition. The U15s won the only match they played, against CBC. Tennis : Tennis saw the 1st team successful against Girls’ College, then had a walkover in the first round of the Mim du Toit whilst the junior sides so far have won all their matches. Squash : In some friendly squash matches against Convent the U15 and U16 teams won. The U14 side only went down to a higher age-group. Jonathan Makola is optimistic of great things from some of our junior players so it will be interesting to see how they develop. Our 1st team also recorded a convincing victory over Girls’ College. Cricket : Matthew Bint’s 59 saved the 1st XI cricket, and in fact set up an emphatic win, at home to Petra in the first match. Gerald Aliseni, better known for his bowling, gave solid support in a vital last wicket stand that gave the team a total to defend. That proved to be plenty as Alistair Holman (5-3) and Paul Trethowan (3-8) bowled the visitors out for 32. Rain deprived the side of [probable!] victory over CBC last Saturday. All bowlers featured as CBC were bowled out for 152 and when the close came Jason Graham was 35* out of 77-1. Jonathan Brown scored a century on his Falcon debut for the 14As against Petra and two early wins reveal good promise in that agegroup. MacIntosh has also scored an unbeaten half-century. Sibanda took 5-6 versus Petra and Nhira achieved a rare hat-trick against CBC. The 15As have also won both their matches. Brett Gait has featured in the batting on both occasions, though Gareth Bint is the only batsman yet to reach 50, something he didn’t actually manage last year so that is encouraging. Gareth Brown, Raz Dube and Dirk Zietsman have been among the wickets. The 16 As are not the strongest side Falcon has ever put out. Credit must, however, be given for two good bowling performances. The spinners, Craig Shaw and Bukhosi Sibanda, were to the fore in the match against Petra. Tapiwa Zindoga took a fine 5-31 against CBC supported by 3 wickets from Craig Thorpe. The batting unfortunately has let us down and led to defeat in both fixtures. Some other notable performances have come from Keegan Bray for the U16 Bs took 8-35 including a hat-trick. For the 3rds Greg Howes made a match-winning 54*, Rance Erasmus ensuring that result with 5-15. Swimming : During the holidays Seamus McGovern, Matthew Ward, Craig and Keith Wale all recorded a string of 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in the Matabeleland swimming championships but the pick was Grant Beahan with 12 1sts including one record and gaining selection for the Zimbabwe side at a gala in South Africa. Finally, last Tuesday saw the first cross-country event of the year, the relays. Hervey dominated both the senior and junior events and so clearly won the overall title. The battle for the other places were more competitive but Oates it was who took the second place from George Grey and Chubb who tied for third. Founders and Tredgold made up the rear. Seamus McGovern, I believe, was the fastest junior runner, Tendai Mudzimu the quickest senior. |
