Just past the half-way point....

We have now reached the half way point in term and I don’t feel that the earlier predictions of a long hard slog have been borne out. So far things have run as smoothly as we could expect for a busy term and on the sports field we have continued to acquit ourselves well and with a fair amount of success. It is a while since I last submitted a sports report so I will try to summarise the main happenings in each sport and highlight the principle results.

Soccer

At first team level, the soccer team has probably been our most successful side. At this stage in the season they remain unbeaten and are progressing in the local stages of the Coca Cola tournament. I would be damning the boys with faint praise if I said that the in the two matches I watched they were not up against very strong sides, but both teams were despatched convincingly by 5 or 6 goals and the performance in the district championship showed that we are capable of progressing further in this competition.

The junior sides have had fewer games and have been less successful against schools from Bulawayo. Having just been persuaded to return to coaching U16 soccer, I realise I have a challenge ahead of me but make no promises of instant success!

Our 1st XI side also competed for the Kambarami Trophy, pitted against Petra and CBC. The weak Petra side was thoroughly beaten but we held our composure to defeat CBC also and so lift the Trophy for the first time.

Hockey
The first team may not be unbeaten for the season but its recent results have been very successful. Having already been beaten twice by Prince Edward we travelled up there with a weakened side due to U17 trials and promptly defeated them by the only goal of the match and returned to Harare a week later to win 2-1 at St John’s which was obviously also very satisfying.

That same weekend we had matches against Midlands Christian College for the first time in a number of years. Our 2nd XI played an excellent game against their 1sts and won 3-1 in what was a very good match to watch.

The three junior A sides also played and although all three won none of the coaches thinks their side played particularly well. It was a successful afternoon, however, not just in terms of results but in renewing contacts with MCC and the fact that we had competitive matches.

The juniors had previously had some very uncompetitive games against Northlea, all won by large margins but were more tested the previous week at CBC. In those games, the U14 A and U16 A sides did well to come out victorious and the U15 As were not disgraced despite losing quite heavily.

Various hockey trials have also taken place over the last few weeks and the following boys were selected:

Side Selected
Zimbabwe Schools S Williams
Zimbabwe U18 A G Hodges
Zimbabwe U18 B M Bimha
Zimbabwe U17 A S Williams, A Roberts, G Manchip
Matabeleland U18 A O Grobler, I Austen
Matabeleland U18 B K Ewing (captain), G Hodges, A Moseley, R Ashworth, M Bimha

We have also just had the Inter House hockey competition which is always an exciting and enjoyable week. This year was no exception though I didn’t feel the standard of the senior hockey was as good as some years. Teams seemed to rely more than necessary on the ‘direct approach’ which may have proved effective for them but didn’t lead to attractive hockey. Anyway George Grey ran out winners in the senior section after defeating Hervey in the decisive final match of the round robin. Hervey also missed out in the juniors. The final match here also pitted the top two sides together and Founders it was who were victorious.

Later in the term we had hockey matches against Milton with the three junior A teams all victorious, Keith Wale doing especially well for the U15 A scoring all 5 goals in their 5-1 win. As I umpired the match I can vouch for the fact that he played well. The Firsts had a relatively comfortable 3-0 success with Alayne Moseley scoring a hat-trick.

In the same week we saw more hockey at Falcon, this time for senior sides against CBC. Results were a little disappointing with only the 3rd XI registering a win. The seconds were uncharacteristically poor. The 1st XI had much of the pressure in their game but were unable to convert chances including a good number of short corners whilst CBC always looked dangerous on attack and had some impressive short corner moves which we did well to keep out. Keeper, Masimba Bimha, and defender Keith Ewing both made some vital saves at the back. CBC however went a goal up and it looked as if that might prove the difference between the two sides until Ian Austen hit home a rather controversial equaliser due to an incident in the build up. Whatever the case I think we deserved the goal and it had certainly been an entertaining game to watch, not always classical hockey but undoubtedly with plenty of action and incident.

Rugby
Life has been tough for the rugby teams, especially the first fifteen. There is always a great weight of expectation upon them and this season’s results just haven’t gone our way. It is probably not the strongest side we have ever fielded and we have been up against some good sides and probably as a result of those two factors we have also suffered some injuries to players whose replacements just aren’t quite as good. It is one of those things and there is little that can be done about it. They did record a good win against Lomagundi, one of the few home matches for the 1st XV this season. The 2nd XV Greyhounds continue their usual winning ways and the junior sides also show promise of good 1st XVs in years to come. The U15 A side is particularly strong and has done very well so far.

A number of Falcon boys also gained selection for the Zimbabwe U19 team for the South African Craven Week:

D Carruthers-Smith

R Swemmer

L Turner

R Valdal

D Crouch

(non-travelling reserve)

Later in the term we had rugby home and away with CBC our opponents once again. The junior sides were in town and emerged, all six, victorious which was a good effort. I haven’t heard a lot of detail about the wins but George Lee-Bell happened to mention that Scott Rogers had had a particularly good game for the U16 B as hooker. At Falcon the 2nd, 3rd and 4th XVs all had comfortable victories but the 1st XV sadly went down by a single point in a close fought match.

Squash

This time I do have a number of squash results to hand. We are in the mid season break at the moment but matches resume in earnest next week. The teams have not been very successful it must be said and enthusiasm for squash in the College is not as great as it has been in the past leading to less competition for places.

Volleyball

A Falcon volleyball team is in what might be called an embryonic stage. They have played one or two matches locally and one up at St John’s. We are not taking the volleyball world by storm but those who play are glad to be there and we will follow their progress with interest.

FOB Athletics

Lastly but far from leastly, we are proud to record that Nikela Ndebele, who left Falcon at the end of 1997, became the first Zimbabwean athlete to record a qualifying time for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England, in the 200m. He is currently based in the United States.
