SPORTS REPORT
Falcon College sports report
25 September 2005
There
have been a number of problems relating to adding or deleting things
from the website which is my excuse for not being very regular in my
reports though I do have to add that some that I have written have not
been uploaded. If in doubt blame someone else. How else can Zimbabwe
operate! Anyway, here is some recent news from the past holiday and
first quarter of the Third Term
Holidays
Towards
the start of the holidays our soccer team went to the CHISZ schools
tournament and managed to reach the final which they sadly lost – on
penalties if I remember rightly. The 1st cricket was also in action at
the PE Festival. They began with a good win over Hillcrest but then
messed up in games against St John’s which they could or should have
won and Churchill who may be a good side but we might have made a
better account of ourselves. Daniel Landman and Jim Reid scored
fifties against Hillcrest and Nigel Mubvumbi made two fair scores not
out lower down the order. Paul Trethowan proved the most consistent
and successful bowler with wickets in each match.
Falcon
boys also took part in age-group tournaments representing
Matabeleland. Graham Swanepoel, Godwin Mamhiyo, Jack Randle, Corey van
Rensburg all had some success for their respective teams. Keith
Murray, Ross McTaggart, Sean Walters, Duncan Rawstorne all played for
Zimbabwe U19 rugby in a World Cup qualifier vs Namibia which they lost
narrowly.
Third
Term
Tennis
Tennis coach, Adam Joelson, has submitted the following report :
The
tennis teams have so far played very well with the only loses coming
from the senior teams,1st and 2nd, against CBC. There have been some
team changes as I am trying to come up with a formidable team for next
year, given that the majority of the 1st team will be leaving at the
end of the year. The 1st team has to date only played one match and
the 2nd two with the other match being a 5-1 win over Girls’
College. The junior teams have enjoyed success to date with all teams
registering wins.
The
major highlight of the Tennis has been the College staff vs College
prefects match. The matches were very entertaining and were evenly
balanced. The staff who were tipped to win the encounter did not find
it easy playing the prefects who really gave a good account of
themselves drawing 3 games each
Basketball
Sadly
the 1st team has not made a good start to the season losing to both
CBC and Petra though both matches were high scoring and we went down
by 3 points in both instances. At junior level the U16 side has been
most successful winning the 4 encounters they have contested. U14 and
U15 teams have both had mixed success with wins and losses to their
credit.
Waterpolo
This
term the authorities have decided, probably sensibly, that all water
polo, both senior and junior, should be held at a single tournament on
a Saturday, often involving girls’ schools also. Time will tell with
this will help to promote the sport but it certainly helps to some
extent on the transport front in these days of no fuel. The big match
is always the 1st team clash with CBC. In the first week of term we
had had problems with our pool and we will use that as a probably
legitimate excuse for going down the first time around but the return
match on the second weekend was a resounding victory to Falcon. For
some reason I have not been handed the full results of that second
tournament but I can note victories for out 2nds and U16 teams over
that first weekend.
Cricket
The
full cricket results for the matches against Lomagundi should be
posted elsewhere on the website but it is always easy for me to make
most comments about the cricket. The first weekend we took on Milton
who are certainly not without their talent and so three convincing
victories out of 4 was an encouraging performance. Having bowled
Milton out for just 145 – Trethowan and Swanepoel the principal
wicket-takers – we won at a canter by 9 wickets with half centuries
for Jason Graham and Dan Landman. At lower levels Gerald Mashange and
Toch Enwerem (U14 A) and Sean Beevor (U15 A) all recorded their best
bowling figures at the College. The 16 A side was the only one to lose
but it was a much more positive performance than some in 1st term
The
2nd and B teams all went to Plumtree and came back victorious. Muzenda
in the 15 Bs had the most successful day, scoring 56 and then taking 6
wickets, a performance which earned him a call up for the A side the
following week.
Last
weekend the 3rd XI and U16 B teams went down to Petra 1st and U16 A
sides respectively but were still competitive. Other teams played
against Lomagundi and all recorded resounding victories, except,
sadly, the 1st XI. Since we began to play full fixtures against
Lomagundi in 1997 our first team has had one of those inexplicable
runs of defeats against them. As on numerous occasions in the past we
really should have beaten them but managed to bundle it on the day.
The players will cite pitch deterioration and umpiring decisions going
against them but allowing Lomagundi to recover from 60-6 to reach over
180 was entirely in their hands! These things happen and we trust they
will turn such a result to their benefit in the remainder of the
season.
The
U14 As had a crushing win by almost 300 runs. Corey van Rensburg began
the season with a century against Milton and went one better by
scoring 217 this time around, the highest record score by a Falcon U14
A player. He shared in a stand of over 300 (if the scorer is to be
trusted and I think he is) with Godwill Mamhiyo (82) which is a
remarkable feat of concentration for two U14 boys. The 2nd XI notched
up a phenomenal tally of 516-9 in their 50 overs, Jason Maritz, Nige
Mubvumbi, George Piers, Jason Paterson and Hamish Graham all passing
50 before Adam Barnard and Jeremy Richards (9 wickets in 2 matches)
bowled the opposition out for 55 to win by a mere 461 runs. Surely a
record or two along the way there! But I reserve the main accolade for
my poor old U16 A teams who finally notched up their first win of the
year. This term we have recruited four boys on a cricket scholarship
in conjunction with Zimbabwe Cricket and two of them, Stevie Macheka
and Cunningham Ncube, have joined this particular side. It is a bit
like David Beckham and Steven Gerrard signing to play to Crystal
Palace but we are delighted to have them and they have made a clear
difference to this side. Macheka bowled very well as Lomagundi were
dismissed for 148 but the main prize went to Tinashe Murasiranwa who
took 4 wickets in an over including the first U16 hat-trick since
1985. He then starred in an opening partnership of 70 with Tom Randell
(43) who was dismissed just before we passed their total, Cunningham
Ncube an accomplished 41 not out to give us an 8 wicket victory.
Continuing on to use up available time we finally called it a day at
271-5 with Macheka smashing 50 off 17 balls!
For
the record, some other notable individual achievements against
Lomagundi were Arthur Ndabambi (14 B) 85, Peter Trethowan (15 A) 88,
Sean Beevor (15 A) 4-9.
