Match Report

The Old Wimbledonians Club in SW20 provided an attractive and convenient venue for the second FOB v Petrian cricket match. The first encounter, held in Oxford in 1997, was won by Falcon.

Fortunately we were greeted by pleasantly warm afternoon sunshine. With the smell of braai smoke in the air and the steady stream of lager flowing to lubricate the boisterous supporters on the clubhouse verandah, you could have been forgiven for thinking you were closer to home.

Falcon won the toss and elected to bat but suffered an immediate set back with our opener dismissed on the first ball of the afternoon to a fine catch at fine leg! However, Sanky (33 runs)and Bashall (27 runs) repaired the damage in a partnership of 74, scored off 11 overs, in a fine exhibition of strokeplay.  Unfortunately they were dismissed in successive overs and wickets then fell at regular intervals. Our middle order's cause was not helped by some accurate bowling from the Vandoras brothers. A quick fire 28 from Hagelthorn in 18 balls towards the end took our total to 161 for eight from our alloted 30 overs.

Our opening bowlers bowled well and frequently beat the bat but with no reward as the Peterhouse batsmen put together a useful opening partnership of 50.  However, the increase in the asking run rate induced some rash shots from the opposition and we took four wickets by the time they had reached three figures, including some reputable scalps. Hutchings and Paynter then built a decisive partnership including some mighty blows over mid wicket (one destroying the car windscreen of their team mate!). With Peterhouse bearing down on their target, as so often before, the captain tossed the ball to the evergreen Turner (son of the legendary DET). Another high class spell of bowling sent a further Petrean to the pavilion but
could not prevent the winning runs being scored with ten balls to spare.

So Peterhouse ran out victors by five wickets. There followed a presentation of the man of the match awards, which went to Hutchings and Turner, and the drawing of the raffle which raised L100 for the college. The players and supporters then enjoyed the fine spread from the braai and much good reminiscence.

We look forward to the next match in 2003 and thanks to all the players and supporters whom contributed to such a fine afternoon.
