Headmaster's Weekly Bulletin: 3 October 2008

WEEK FOUR OF THIRD TERM, 2008

Dear Parents

Thank you to all who came to the Harare meeting. We were disappointed at the number who attended. What we had to do was a Ministry requirement. We were delighted, however, at the positive response on fees – for that we are all most grateful.

Once again, the Night Club scene and boys fighting has caused an issue in the College. A boy has been badly hurt in a fight at a night club in Bulawayo. I cannot say this with more feeling. “Many of these venues are really not suitable for young people and parents must stand firm and stop their children from patronizing these places.” They are placing their children in danger if they let them go to these venues. It is very easy to be wise after the event and I am not suggesting that young people should not go out, but please do take heed of this warning.

SPORT:
Cricket:
It has been a short week, but our boys did play Cricket in Harare in the St. John’s 20/20. They beat Prince Edward and St. George’s, but lost to St. John’s in the semi-final. It is interesting to note that we beat St. George’s and they were the eventual winners of the tournament.
20/20 Matches were played vs Petra on Tuesday. The 1st, 16A, 15A and 14A all won.
G. Mamhiyo scored 84 for the 1st XI, J Randle 53, whilst A van Heerden scored 75 for the 16A’s.

Basketball:

1st Team Falcon vs Petra Falcon won 46-12
1st Team Falcon vs CBC Falcon won 26-6
U15 Falcon vs Petra Falcon won 19-10
U15 Falcon vs CBC Falcon won 20-0
Falcon U14 vs Petra Falcon won 10-2
Falcon U14 vs CBC Falcon won 14-7

We won the Interschools’ Relays’ Swimming Gala on Wednesday by a considerable margin – this was great as we have not been so much better than the opposition in the past. I thank Barbara Heymans and Tracey McGovern and the staff for their input. Many boys who swim in this gala are not regular swimmers and it has proved popular and a fun event. The final points for the event were:

Place School Points
5th Dominican Convent 62
4th Girls College 78
3rd Petra 118
2nd CBC 145
1st Falcon College 197

Waterpolo:
Falcon vs CBC 1st teams - Falcon won the Hart trophy – after extra time – golden goal rule.
Falcon vs CBC U16A – Falcon lost 5-6

I look forward to seeing many of you this weekend at our local Cricket Derby matches against CBC.
