WEEK THREE OF FIRST TERM 2009

Dear Parents

We have had a very full period at the College. Our Primary Schools' Cricket Festival went extremely well with the final going down to the wire with Ruzawi winning by one run! It was wonderful to have so many visiting parents, many of whom have been incredibly complimentary about the College.

CULTURAL WEEKEND:
This weekend we host our annual Cultural Weekend, which this year involves 13 schools. Those attending are Arundel, Peterhouse, Chisipite, Convent Harare, Lomagundi, Prince Edward, St George's, Speciss College, Convent Bulawayo, Girls' College, EATC, Petra and ourselves. Workshops in Art, run by Shamilla Aasha from Convent, Music (instrumental), run by Billy St. John, Music (singing) run by Richard Hartnack (Girls' College), Drama - run by John Dennison from St. George's, dance run by Heath Lambert from Gaborone and writing, run by Tondevai Nzanga and Wendy Engelbrecht from Peterhouse, are all taking place.
This is a massive undertaking which is always a great success and a pleasure to host at the College.

BULLYING:
Sadly, this week I have had to ask a Fourth Form boy to leave the College as a result of an incident in Founders House. He took it upon himself to beat some boys, which is totally unacceptable. He had a previous record and has left the College. I also suspended a boy, pending further investigation into this issue. We have had to punish a group of boys associated with this incident. We have also punished boys in Oates for a similar kind of incident. I have made it quite clear that this sort of behaviour is totally unacceptable under any circumstances. We have a hierarchical system, but we cannot have 'thugs' behind a perfectly sound system, using the code of silence and threats to protect them. I am delighted at how the prefect body has performed in routing out these elements.

SPORTS RESULTS:
Cross Country - This week we had our Interhouse and Individual cross country. In this event all able-bodied boys run. It is a wonderful opportunity for the first real Interhouse activity. The boys performed extremely well on a cool, damp afternoon. The whole competition was keenly contested with nearly all Houses registering success in some area.

Next week is our half term break - we are all looking forward to that time. It will be the first real opportunity for boys to get home.

The term dates are unlikely to change, except that we would end school on Wednesday 8th April and not Tuesday 7th April, as is on the calendar. The start of next term will remain the same. It needs to be noted that we are likely to be out of "sync" with other schools' Fixture Free weekends for the first one next term. We do not believe that it is advantageous to have a break after 2 weeks because of Africa Day. We will observe Africa Day, but will not have a Fixture Free on that day. Dates to be published next week.
