Headmaster's newletter, week one of first term 2010

The term has started with a bang - 'Open Day', and our primary schools' Cricket festival!

Our new boys have settled in well, with very few issues of any kind, which is fantastic.

I must just say that the late return of pupils has once again caused an awful lot of anxiety and extra work, for both Administrative staff and Housemasters. Our intention is to penalize boys by the removal of floating weekends in future, if they are late and we have not been advised. Our Catering Department makes lunch for boys and very often it is wasted by the non- or late arrival of boys. This practice is bad manners AND MUST STOP. Boys are due in at school by midday on opening day.

We have also had parents travelling rather quickly on the narrow tar section out to the College. This is very dangerous and I would appeal to everyone to travel at a safe speed, please. There are often cattle and other animals on the road, so please be careful.

SPORT:
Fishing:
During the holidays, the Bydawell brothers were selected to represent Zimbabwe in two different fishing tournaments. In the first competition, held at Kariba, G.S. Bydawell came 1st out of 16 participants, while C.J. Bydawell was placed 5th. The Zimbabwe team was placed 1st with South Africa and Namibian team following them. As a result of his performance, Grant Bydawell has been selected as one of a four-member Zone 6 team which will represent the three countries later this year.

In the second tournament held in South Africa, Craig Bydawell landed the largest Bass which weighed just under 3 kg. Both boys are to be congratulated for their outstanding achievements.

Cricket Equipment:
We have some quality cricket kit available for sale at very reasonable prices. If your son needs a bat, helmet, pads or gloves, they are available and he should enquire through his cricket coach.

SOUTHERN AFRICA INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS' RUGBY FESTIVAL:
It has been confirmed that we will host this festival from Wednesday 16 June to Tuesday 22nd June 2010. It is a great privilege to be given this opportunity, with ten sides coming from South Africa. If there is anyone out there who feels they could help in any way with this festival, either in cash or kind, please do not hesitate to contact us. We really want this to be a special occasion.

DIRECTOR OF STUDIES:
I am pleased to announce that I have appointed Mr. Tendeka Matatu as the Director of Studies. He becomes responsible for all matters academic and his experience and intimate knowledge of our system will be a great asset.

OPEN DAY/PRIMARY SCHOOLS' CRICKET FESTIVAL:
This weekend sees these two events taking place. It is very early in the term, but we feel that the sooner we start, the better. I would like to make the point that people who wish to see the school with a view to sending boys here, are welcome at any time. We would love them to come and see the school working and while we do have Open days, that is not the only time we are prepared to show people around.
