Headmaster's newsletter, week four of first term 2010

I hope that you all had a pleasant weekend with your boys. I appreciate the communication from parents and thank those who have asked questions and passed on information.

The issue of swearing came up and I would like to assure parents that it is not tolerated at the College. The Housemasters have addressed the boys and made it crystal clear where the lines are drawn. Sadly, one can hear all these bad words on a movie that is rated 13 and while that is no excuse, it does make for a difficult scenario. We will work hard at educating our young men as to what is, and is not, acceptable.

We received some sad news this week that Mr. Neil van Coller, the CEO of Pretoria Boys' High and a Falcon Old Boy, who has helped us a great deal in our relationship with Pretoria Boys' High, passed away after a heart attack. Our sympathy and condolences go to his wife and children.

This week we have Mr. Malcolm Wharton, the Principal of Hartpury College in Gloucester, U.K, will be visiting us.. This is a great opportunity for the Lower and Upper Sixth boys to hear about a dynamic education institution where our pupils have excelled in the past.

The Quest Africa programme kicks off this coming week with the first intake arriving on Monday. This is an exciting development and extension of the College. I am quite sure that the programme will gather momentum from here on in and there will be mutual benefit for both Falcon and Quest. I wish William and Cindy Schultz all the very best of luck with the new venture.

BUSES:
Last Friday the buses taking boys back to Harare for the Fixture Free Weekend arrived at Borrowdale Race Course just before 6.00 p.m. This was later than expected because of numerous Police road blocks and the weather, for which we apologise. We have already put into motion a plan to try and circumvent these delays.

Disturbingly, however, a number of parents failed to collect their sons until well after 6.00 p.m. which proved to be very inconvenient for both drivers and staff escorts alike. They are instructed to wait until all boys have been collected. We would really appreciate it if parents made every effort to collect their sons by 6.00 p.m. at the latest.

On a positive note, everyone would appear to have been on time for the bus departure on Monday.

The practice of stopping at the "On the Run" complex in Gweru for refreshments, has been stopped. In future, parents will need to supply their sons with "packed lunches" for the journey back to Falcon. This will apply for Sports' Fixtures and Fixture Free Weekends.

SPORT:
A few of our Athletes travel to Louis Trichardt to compete in an Athletics' meeting this weekend. This is really a pioneering venture to "feel the water". I wish them all the very best of luck and look forward to the feedback.

Cricket:
2nd XI, 16A, 15A, 14A - all won 20/20 matches vs Petra on Thursday 4th February.
In the 16A, T. Madondo scored 98 not out and T. Mujuru took 4-17

U15 Falcon lost 16-21
