Headmaster's newsletter, week six of first term 2010

It was good to see so many parents at the cricket played against Peterhouse over the weekend. The matches were well contested and a lot of very good sportsmanship and camaraderie was shown by both sides. This is exactly what we would expect. Our 1st XI is playing in a 20/20 competition at Petra this weekend and I am sure they would value your support on Friday and Saturday.

Several parents have asked about their son's post ‘O' level and post AS level academic path. What are they doing? How is their timetable working, etc.? A document will accompany your sons home this weekend, explaining all of this. Hereafter, if there are still things that you do not understand, then please contact your son's Housemaster. It is vital that you have input into your son's choice of subjects.

EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGIST:
Mrs. Lyn McIlvaine, an Educational Psychologist from Harare, will be visiting Falcon from 1st March to 5th March, 2010.
Mrs. McIlvaine does educational assessments and is able to diagnose potential learning difficulties. This is helpful for both the student and the teacher as it enables teachers to know who needs extra help and in what form. Mrs. McIlvaine is also able to recommend extra time in public exams for those students whom she feels will benefit from it. The recommendation is then sent to Cambridge by the School and Cambridge will normally allow the extra time recommended.
Mrs. McIlvaine does a two hour assessment with the student and then would like an hour's interview with the parents afterwards, in order to discuss her findings. The charge is US$250 and parents will need to complete a case history form and provide school and any other assessment reports for her to look through. All reports will be returned to the parents. If you would like your son to be assessed, please contact Miss A. Watson at awatson@falconcollege.com. Please take note that places are limited and will be allocated strictly upon payment.
Should you prefer to make private arrangements to see Mrs. McIlvaine, she can be contacted through her secretary, Mrs. T. Howard, at howardt@yoafrica.com, or on the following telephone numbers: 04-490916 and 0912-248-537

GIRLS' BOARDING HOUSE:
We are looking for someone to run a Girls' Boarding House in Bulawayo, for us. The person would be responsible initially for seven girls, all of whom are staff daughters.
Anyone interested should contact the Headmaster for further information and an appointment for an interview.

SPORTING RESULTS:
Cricket vs Peterhouse:
On the face of it, this was not a very successful weekend's Cricket, with only the U15B winning their match. The 15A's nearly pulled off a very fine victory, only to lose narrowly and the 1st XI certainly had the best of their 2-day match, with hindsight, perhaps declaring a little late. The 1st team match was drawn. The Mini League team also had 2 highly entertaining days of cricket.
Corey van Rensburg hit 2 fifties for the 1st XI and has now scored over 1000 runs at that level. Jono Brown also got a half century for the side and Toch Enwerem, with 5-37 and 48 not out, had a fine all round match.
Other notable batsmen at the weekend were Keefe, Snyder, Scheepers (14A), Fraser (16A) and bowling accolades go to
B. Sargeant (15B), Dube (3rd), Walder (2nd) and Mhlonga and Mujakachi (Mini League).
