Headmaster's newsletter, week seven of first term 2010

Thank you to all the parents who contacted me, or the Housemasters, over their concerns after the weekend. This communication is fantastic, as it just stops car park chatter and empowers us to fix issues. There are many false perceptions that can be sorted out with simple communication. Long may this continue.

I would also like to thank all prospective and current parents who attended the function in Harare on Wednesday. It is always very good to chat and to be able to keep folk informed, on a personal basis, of what is happening at the College. Will Randle's presentation on the Forms One and Two Adventure Course, and his Woodsmoke Club, would also have provided parents with more insight into what we do to integrate and educate boys. I would like to thank Will for this contribution.

I have spoken to the School about unreasonable requests being made of boys by more senior boys. I have made it quite clear that mindless punishment is not what we are about and have told the whole school that we strive for cheerful discipline. The prefects have also been re-educated as to what this means.
Aggressive behaviour and conflict are also of concern presently and I have spoken to the School on this topic. Correct channels of communication and areas where boys can get support when frustrated, have been clearly pointed out.

Last week we published the names of boys who had gained accolades in the academic world. Several people asked about these and what they meant. These young men earn these awards through hard work and the results they achieve. They carry with them substantial rebates on fees and they deserve them.

SPORT:
Over the weekend we had several boys doing various sporting events around the country.
Tennis players played in national schools' trials and X. Mhlanga was chosen as a non-travelling reserve for the Zimbabwe Schools' Senior side, while K. Midlane made the Junior National side. This is the first time in quite a while we have had boys in national Tennis teams.

Boys also competed in the Senior National Swimming Championships and the following achieved medals:

  Gold Silver Bronze
C. Charsley     1
L. Fargnoli 2 4 4
C. Pritchard 2 3 1
J. Schlachter 1 2

M. Smit, a new boy to Falcon from Botswana, achieved a gold medal in the Botswana National Moto Cross event.

Our Cricket team played in the Petra 20/20 tournament. We managed a victory against CBC, but lost heavily to St. George's and Churchill in a good game.

CULTURAL WEEKEND:
We look forward this weekend to hosting our annual Cultural weekend. The various workshops are headed up this year as follows:

Art Mrs. Jacqui Stewart Singing Hleze Kunju
Dance IYASA Dance Company Writing Christopher Mlalazi
Music Tinashe Mukarati Drama Stix Mhlanga

This is a popular and very well attended weekend in our School calendar, which benefits a great many young people. There will be a total of 16 schools represented.

This Friday a 'new' singing group performed for the first time for the School in Assembly, and were outstanding. It is with real pleasure that I congratulate them. The group is led by Delroy Sibanda.

Jason Stone also spoke to the School in Assembly, as he is leaving due to the fact that his Leukemia has re-occurred and he will not be able to continue at School. He has our greatest support. His message was outstanding.

Greatness, it turns out, is largely a matter of conscious choice and discipline"
