Headmaster's newsletter, week five of second term

We hope that you had a good weekend with your sons. All the boys whose parents have replied in the affirmative, and staff, have now been inoculated, so hopefully, the measles saga should be a thing of the past. Boys whose parents have not replied, will be inoculated this coming week, unless we hear from parents to the contrary. Our Sanatorium staff have worked extremely hard, as you can well imagine, and I am personally very grateful to them for their amazing input.

MARKETING:
I attended a marketing evening for Stanford Lake (an English Medium co-ed boarding school between Polokwane and Tzaneen), in Bulawayo this week. It is always good to see how other schools see us and then ultimately, how we see them. It also provided a good opportunity to set up relations across the border for sport and cultural exchange. It is interesting to note that their fees are $11 466,60 a year, or $3 822,20 a term.

THE SCHOOL COUNSELLOR:
I would like to make parents aware of the service our Counsellor provides. Mr. Doug Derby comes to Falcon on a weekly basis and spends at least one night with us. Boys with any issues can very discreetly make an appointment to see him and talk to him on any topic whatsoever. These talks observe total confidentiality and he is a man to whom boys find it very easy to talk to. Doug also does some Life Skills' lessons. His counselling is a facility that all boys should be encouraged to utilize. He is a family man with two children at university and one at school in Bulawayo. He resides in Gweru.

RUGBY U19 NATIONAL TRIALS:
Over the Fixture Free Weekend our boys played in the U19 National Rugby Trials and two boys have been selected to play at Craven Week; they are Corey van Rensburg and Michael MacIntosh. I congratulate them both on this achievement.
Please see attached programme and information pertaining to the Independent Schools' Rugby Festival.

PROSPECTIVE PARENTS:
Junior Schools' parents are, at this time, battling with the inevitable question of where to send their sons and daughters for high school. I would ask our parents to speak to people who have potential sons who could come to Falcon, and urge them to make a positive choice. Our School does offer a great deal, as do many others, but the final product is what I believe is unique at the College; a young man who is confident, not arrogant, and who would cope in any situation, in any society, anywhere.

MARK ORDERS;
Our first mark orders have now been completed and you should enquire as to how your son has done. An interest from all parties is vital if we are to get the best out of your boys. Your son's ‘Astra' scores will shortly be done as well, and an interest in the all-round success of your child is vital.
