Headmaster's newsletter, week seven of second term

We have had our half term break and our Independent Schools’ Rugby Festival, which was an amazing success. It was wonderful to have six South African schools here and have them say that they would like the Festival to come back here in two years’ time.

Our Zimbabwean schools did very well and while we appreciate that the schools who came, do not all play in the top division in South Africa, our schools were very competitive.

The Festival has created an awareness that we never had before and several parents asked why we were not marketing the school in South Africa as our unique ‘old fashioned values’ with modern education are exactly what a lot of parents in South Africa are looking for.

I would also like to thank the numerous parents who became heavily involved in the Festival - their input made all the difference, with some delightful touches. My thanks, too, go to the many members of the Falcon staff who gave up their Fixture Free Weekend to be part of the event. It is much appreciated.

Martha, my wife, has worked particularly hard and her efforts really did make all the difference - her attention to detail and meticulous checking made it all what it was.

We also hosted Treverton from Natal on Friday, and they played Soccer against our 1st team. We drew the game 1-1. They, too, are keen to bring other teams back to our country.

We have also had a historic visit by Mr. John Turner and his family. John is the son of our former legendary headmaster, Mr. Dougall Turner. John was born at Falcon and attended school here. He brought his father’s ashes and a sandstone plaque to be housed in the Chapel. He spoke with passion to the College in Chapel on Thursday morning.

The following boys have been recognized for their efforts in the first Mark Order of the term. Commendations are for boys who have made a good effort and progress, and the Headmaster’s Accolades are for outstanding performances in the mark order.

The boys are enjoying their music at Falcon and we are happy to inform you that we have established a set music programme. Mrs. Ferreira is teaching 13 piano, 10 guitar and 3 vocal lessons to the boys. The charge is US$50 for each music pupil this term. The money will be put on to your statement at the end of term in the form of a disbursement. The money generated from these music lessons will go towards purchasing microphones needed for future productions at Falcon. We would like to thank you all for your support and music has taken off in a really big way this term.
