Headmaster's newsletter, week seven of first term 2011

Despite it being half term, last weekend was full of sport. The U16 Basketball side played in a major private schools’ tournament at St. John’s College in Johannesburg, where we came 5th out of 15 schools. Our boys were well accepted and complimented on their behaviour.

The First XI Cricket played in the Petra T/20 tournament, where they reached the semi-final. The chase of big scores against both Petra and Kyle, showed real determination. Sadly, our top order batting did not do so well. However, I really was very impressed with the support our Cricketers received in Bulawayo and delighted at the manners exhibited by the boys I came across. It is exactly what we would expect, but nonetheless very encouraging.

The Natural History Society visited the Bristow’s farm on the Limpopo and had a wonderful time. Apart from some exotic bird spotting (a Pels Fishing owl), they saw dinosaur fossils and learned a great deal about trees, and the internal workings of an impala which had been shot. Such expeditions are what creates that all-round education of our boys. I am grateful to the staff for their input on this trip.

This week Mr. Fernandes spoke in Chapel on two of our on-going issues, the first being that we all need to encourage everyone else – the weakest individual needs to be encouraged and helped to lift his performance in all areas – academic, sporting and cultural. The second point he made was about appropriate punishment. Mr. Fleming, our Second Master, and the Housemasters, have been working hard at this. Issues like sleep deprivation and excessive punishment are not part of what we stand for.
