Term 2005
As we approach the 20th Anniversary of the establishment of Quiet Waters, we wish especially to remember Ron Hartley and his immense contribution to the whole project. He was a founding member of the Committee and we are guided to this day by his Policy Document. We miss him enormously.
Unfortunately, because of the poor rainy season the weir did not fill up. In fact because of evaporation and seepage its level is very low at present. If it fills next year, we will have an official opening.
In late May the Quiet Waters Committee sold 79 head of cattle to our next-door neighbour and parent, Mr. Mike Stone. This has generated a large sum of money which has been invested. The interest will be used for new developments. The southern paddocks of the Falcon property and the Wilderness area have been leased to Mr. Stone for grazing.
Some of the funds are being spent on re-aligning the Quiet Waters fence which will increase the size of the Conservation area by approximately 150 hectares. This will include a seasonal wetland area which is very rich in browse and grazing. This exercise was started a month ago and should be complete by the end of September. Visitors to the area will already notice significant changes as can be seen in the photographs on next page.

Mr. Ian Broderick (Oates 1977) who lives and works in England and who spends some of his leisure time in the wilds of Zimbabwe, has generously offered his hard-top Landrover for use on Quiet Waters when he and his wife are not using the vehicle. This gesture will go a long way to alleviating our transport difficulties and we are most grateful to him.
The Chairman and Committee members would like to thank Mr. Graham Armstrong for his hard work in repairing the two existing Landrovers. We appreciate the time he has spent trying to keep the aging vehicles on the road.
At the start of this term Miss Leigh Collin joined the Committee as Treasurer because of her expertise in financial matters. Mr. Tony Bancroft, who had held this position for the past fourteen years moved to the post of Secretary. However, these changes are to be short lived because of Leigh is getting married in early September and will be leaving the College. We are grateful to her for her contributions and wish her well in her new life.
As from next term, Tony Bancroft will return to the Treasurers post and Mrs Laraine King (the Headmasters Secretary) will become Secretary. Laraine has a deep interest in wildlife and is a long standing committee member of the Matabeleland branch of WEZ.
The founding committee of Quiet Waters met for the first time on the 24th October 1985. It was at this meeting that the initial ideas of the development of Quiet Waters were born. The present committee is hoping to have some of form of celebration to mark this historic occasion at the end of October.
Some notable sightings have been made over the last couple of months. In June, a leopard was resident in the picnic site areas at the base of Usandisa for several weeks. It appears to have moved from here into the southern paddocks. The Chairman and his wife at the end of July saw no less than 8 Klipspringer in a matter a five minutes in the same area. Several sightings of Reedbuck and Bushbuck have been made by a number of people. Some of these sightings have been made in the newly established areas close to the College. Kudu, Impala, Duiker, Zebra, Giraffe and Warthog are often seen both in the Quiet Waters area.
